Frédéric Vasseur left Renault on 11 January 2017 after only one season in charge. The split exposed disagreement over how the Formula 1 project should be led.

Frédéric Vasseur left Renault on 11 January 2017, ending a short but significant spell in charge of the manufacturer’s Formula 1 team. Renault described the departure as a mutual decision, but the underlying issue was quickly clear: senior figures did not share the same view of how the works operation should be organised and developed.

Vasseur had joined as racing director and team principal during Renault’s return as a full constructor after the takeover of Lotus. His task was to rebuild a team that had slipped back competitively and structurally. That meant strengthening technical leadership, improving trackside operations and creating a clearer long-term sporting plan.

Instead, the project lost one of its key figures before the 2017 season even began. Vasseur made clear that differing visions inside management had slowed the team’s work and made it harder to operate with the unity Formula 1 demands. In practical terms, it was a setback for a manufacturer trying to re-establish itself against better-settled rivals.

Renault was still in an early rebuilding phase. Stability at the top was supposed to be part of the recovery. Losing Vasseur so quickly raised fresh questions about structure, authority and decision-making inside the team at Enstone and Viry.

The moment became one of the first major turning points of Renault’s modern return, underlining how internal alignment can be as important as car performance in Formula 1.
