His departure closed a 12-year spell in which he had become one of the defining figures in the team’s rise through several identities, from Force India to Racing Point and then Aston Martin.

Formula 1 was heading into a major technical reset for 2022, and teams were reshaping structures in anticipation of a new competitive cycle. In that context, losing a team principal and CEO just before the launch phase of the new season was more than a routine personnel change. It signalled a meaningful shift inside a team trying to establish itself under a more ambitious works-style image.

Szafnauer had played a central role in giving the Silverstone squad stability and direction through financially difficult years as well as ownership change. That made his exit significant beyond the official wording of the statement. He had helped turn a resourceful midfield team into one of the paddock’s most efficient operators.
