Steve Rider, the British sports presenter who became the face of ITV’s Formula 1 coverage in its closing chapter, was born on 28 April 1950.
Rider built his reputation over decades as one of British television’s more reliable sports anchors, spending the bulk of his career at the BBC before crossing to ITV.
His work covered a broad range of sport, but he is perhaps best remembered by F1 audiences for stepping into the presenter’s role during the final stretch of ITV’s long tenure with the sport.
ITV had held Formula 1 rights in the UK since 1997, replacing the BBC and arriving with Adrian Chiles, Jim Rosenthal and the familiar ensemble of Martin Brundle, James Allen and Louise Goodman that became the sound of British commercial F1 broadcasting for over a decade.
By the time Rider took over presenting duties in 2006, the coverage was approaching its end. ITV lost the rights back to the BBC after the 2008 season, meaning Rider’s run coincided almost exactly with the final two and a half years of that era.

He was not the figure who defined ITV’s F1 years – that credit belongs to the longer-serving presenters and commentators who shaped the channel’s identity with the sport across the full eleven seasons. But Rider was a steady, professional presence at the desk during a period that included some significant racing, including Lewis Hamilton’s near-miss in his debut championship season in 2007 and his title win in 2008.
After F1 moved back to the BBC, Rider continued to work in television sport, including extensive coverage of golf. He remained a familiar, if understated, part of the British broadcasting landscape well beyond his time in the F1 studio.
