Sam Bird was born on 9 January 1987, beginning the story of a driver who would later establish himself across several top categories of international motorsport. Although he never started a Formula 1 Grand Prix, Bird developed a clear F1 connection through his later work with Mercedes as a test and reserve driver.
That role placed him inside one of the sport’s leading operations, where simulator work, technical feedback and standby duties were all part of the job. For a driver without a full-time race seat in Formula 1, it remained an important mark of how highly he was rated within the paddock.

Bird’s broader career also showed why that opportunity arrived. He built his reputation in junior single-seaters, became a front-running name in GP2 and later carved out a strong profile in Formula E and endurance racing. His path was not the classic route to a Formula 1 race seat, but it kept him closely connected to the championship and its technical environment.
Bird went on to become one of the better-known British drivers of his generation outside the group of regular Formula 1 starters, with Mercedes forming the clearest link to the F1 world.
