On 1 January 2010, Nico Rosberg was officially released from his Williams contract. It was a key formal step before the Mercedes phase that would define the most important years of his Formula 1 career.

Nico Rosberg’s next chapter effectively began on 1 January 2010, when he was officially released from his Williams contract. He had already confirmed in late October 2009 that he would leave the Grove team at the end of the season, and Mercedes had announced him as a 2010 driver in November. But this date closed the legal link to Williams and cleared the way for the next stage to begin in full.

Rosberg had spent four seasons at Williams, building a reputation for speed, technical sharpness and consistency even without race-winning machinery. The team had given him his Formula 1 debut and a platform to mature, but by the end of 2009 it was clear that his ambitions and Williams’ competitive trajectory were no longer fully aligned.

His release opened the door to Mercedes’ new works era after the manufacturer’s takeover of Brawn GP. At the time, that project still carried uncertainty. It was not yet the dominant force it would later become. Even so, the move placed Rosberg at the centre of one of the most important long-term team builds in modern Formula 1.
