The race developed into an attritional contest rather than a straightforward sprint. Rodríguez started well and kept himself in contention while faster or better-placed rivals ran into trouble. That mattered because Kyalami punished mistakes and mechanical weakness, and the race gradually turned into a test of discipline as much as speed.
The decisive moment came as the order shifted late on. Local privateer John Love looked capable of taking a famous home victory, but a late stop dropped him back and opened the door for Rodríguez. He took full advantage, stayed clear of errors and delivered Cooper-Maserati to the flag first.
It was Rodríguez’s maiden world championship grand prix victory and the first by a Mexican driver in Formula 1. It also gave Cooper one of the last major highlights of its grand prix story, linking Rodríguez permanently to a significant turning point in the sport’s history.
