Nelson Piquet won the Canadian Grand Prix on 17 June 1984 for Brabham-BMW. The result looked like a sharp response from the reigning world champion, but the method was less glamorous: the car was quick, the BMW turbo was powerful, and Piquet’s right foot was being roasted by his own machinery.
A Brabham solution with a nasty side effect
The Brabham BT53 had struggled with heat and reliability, so the team tried a nose-mounted oil-cooling arrangement in Montreal. On the timing screens it worked well enough. Piquet took pole, fought at the front and won ahead of Niki Lauda and Alain Prost, the two McLaren drivers who would spend the season deciding the title between themselves.
Inside the car, the cooling solution created its own problem. Heat from the arrangement reached Piquet’s footwell, badly burning his right foot during the race. The image of a driver winning while his boot was being cooked sounds like a cartoon version of turbo-era Formula 1, which is probably why it fits the period so well.
Turbo speed and physical cost
The 1984 season belonged mostly to McLaren, but Canada showed that Brabham and BMW still had enough single-race potency to hurt the favourites. Piquet’s win came by 2.6 seconds from Lauda, with Prost a distant third. It was a useful result for Brabham, and a painful reminder that experimental packaging often gave the driver the bill.
The race belongs in a date package because it is not only another champion winning another grand prix. It captures a particular version of F1 engineering: fast, improvised, severe and sometimes ridiculous in the way only a successful idea can be ridiculous. Piquet got the trophy. His foot got the detail everyone remembers.
