Mike Spence was born on 30 December 1936. The Briton went on to build a respected Formula 1 career with Lotus and BRM before his life was cut short far too early.

Mike Spence was born on 30 December 1936 and became one of the quietly important British drivers of Formula 1’s 1960s generation. He never had the record of the era’s biggest names, but he earned lasting respect in the paddock for his speed, technical understanding and ability to support leading teams in a demanding period for the sport.

Spence appeared in 37 World Championship Grands Prix and scored one podium, finishing third for Lotus in the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix. He raced in works machinery from Lotus and later BRM, two teams central to the competitive and technical shape of that decade.

His value was not built only on headline results. In that period, teams relied heavily on drivers who could adapt quickly, develop the car and deliver points when the chance came. Spence fitted that role well. He was dependable, versatile and strong enough to remain relevant in an era when F1 cars were becoming faster, lighter and less forgiving.

Spence died in 1968 after an accident at Indianapolis.
