Michael Schumacher started his final Formula 1 race on 25 November 2012 at the Brazilian Grand Prix, finishing seventh for Mercedes at Interlagos.
It was not the kind of farewell his first career might have scripted. There was no victory, no championship podium and no neat return to Ferrari red. Instead, Schumacher’s last race came in a chaotic, wet-dry title decider, with Mercedes still some way from becoming the force it would soon be. The end of the comeback
Schumacher’s Mercedes comeback from 2010 to 2012 had been complicated. The old flashes were there, including Monaco qualifying speed in 2012, but the results never matched the scale of his Ferrari era. The sport had changed, the tyres were different, the cars rewarded different habits, and Mercedes was still building the structure that would dominate after his departure.
At Interlagos, he kept out of enough trouble to score points and close his career with a classified finish. Around him, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso fought for the championship, which gave the day a larger drama. Schumacher’s farewell was almost understated inside that storm.
A final race before Mercedes rose
His last start also sits awkwardly close to what came next. Mercedes became a title-winning machine soon after, with Lewis Hamilton joining in 2013 and the hybrid era beginning in 2014. Schumacher did not get to enjoy that dominance as a driver, but his development years with the team remain part of its long build. Brazil 2012 was the end of his driving record, not the end of his influence.
