Seidl arrived with a strong reputation from Porsche’s LMP1 programme, where he had led one of endurance racing’s most successful projects. McLaren stated that he would report to Zak Brown and take responsibility for all aspects of the team’s F1 racing programme, giving the role clear authority inside the organisation.

It was also an important structural decision. McLaren described the move as part of its Formula 1 performance recovery plan and a broader restructure after several difficult seasons. At that stage, the team was trying to rebuild both technical credibility and operational sharpness after falling away from the front of the grid.

Seidl’s arrival did not change McLaren overnight, and he was set to join during 2019 rather than immediately. Even so, the announcement showed the team was targeting proven leadership with recent winning experience in high-level motorsport.

The decision marked a clear attempt to strengthen the management of McLaren’s F1 project and laid part of the foundation for the team’s longer-term rebuild.
