On 8 April 2018, Formula 1 got one of those reminders it never really wants. Kimi Räikkönen was released from his Ferrari during the Bahrain Grand Prix before the left-rear stop was complete, striking mechanic Francesco Cigarini and ending his own race on the spot. Ferrari’s result sheet did not look disastrous in the end, because Sebastian Vettel still won. The pit lane told a different story.
The incident came during Räikkönen’s second stop, with the Ferrari still not properly serviced at the left-rear corner when the green light sent him away. Cigarini was hit and taken to hospital for surgery after suffering a double leg fracture, while Räikkönen stopped in the pit lane and retired. By the time the race moved on, Ferrari had lost both a likely podium and any sense of a normal Sunday.
What makes the moment stick is how brutally simple it was. Räikkönen did what drivers are trained to do: go when the signal says go. The failure sat with the system and the procedure around it, not with a driver reacting to the light in front of him. Ferrari later said a sensor problem was behind the mistaken release, which only made the whole thing feel colder and more mechanical.
The stewards fined Ferrari €50,000 for releasing the car in a manner that endangered team personnel and caused injury. That was the formal punishment. The real damage was more obvious: one injured mechanic, one retired car, and one of the clearest examples of how a routine two-second job can go wrong in an instant.
