Karun Chandhok was born on 19 January 1984 and later became one of the few Indian drivers to reach Formula 1. His arrival in the world championship carried significance beyond results alone, because it gave India direct representation on the grid at a time when the sport was still expanding its global footprint.

Chandhok reached Formula 1 in 2010 with HRT, a new team operating under difficult competitive and financial conditions. The machinery limited what its drivers could achieve, but simply reaching the championship remained a notable milestone in itself. In 2011 he also appeared for Team Lotus, adding to his Formula 1 record in a period when opportunities were scarce and midfield and new-entry seats were highly contested.
Although his F1 career was brief, Chandhok remained closely connected to the sport. He moved into media work and developed a strong profile as a commentator and analyst, bringing a driver’s perspective to race coverage and technical discussion. That second career gave him a different kind of influence within Formula 1, this time through explanation rather than competition.
His place in the sport’s history rests on both roles. Chandhok represented an important step for Indian involvement in Formula 1, and later helped audiences understand the category from inside the cockpit and beyond it.
