Albon’s Australian qualifying disqualification

On 9 April 2022, Alexander Albon was disqualified from qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix after Williams failed to provide the FIA with the required 1.0-litre fuel sample from his FW44.

The reason it stood out was how unglamorous it was. This was not a crash, a protest or one of Formula 1’s usual rulebook tangles. It was a hard technical line. Article 6.5.2 required that a 1.0-litre sample could be taken from the car at any time, and in Albon’s case it could not. That left the stewards with a routine decision, even if it was a painful one for Williams.

On its own, that would have made this a minor Saturday footnote. Instead it became the setup for one of the weekend’s best drives. Allowed to start the race, Albon went from 20th to 10th on Sunday, stretching a set of hard tyres for 57 laps before pitting at the end and scoring Williams’ first point of the 2022 season.

That is why the disqualification still holds its place in the weekend’s memory. Officially, it was a qualifying exclusion for failing a fuel-sample requirement. In practice, it became the first chapter of a race that made Williams look far sharper than Saturday had suggested.
