Will Stevens was born in Rochford, Essex, on 28 June 1991. His Formula 1 career was short, but it crossed two fragile teams at moments when simply getting cars to the grid was part of the achievement.
Stevens came through British and European single-seater racing, including Formula Renault and Formula Renault 3.5. He was linked with Caterham as a test and development driver before receiving his race debut at the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. That weekend was also Caterham’s final appearance in Formula 1, after the team had already entered administration and missed races before returning through a crowdfunding-assisted effort.
A debut in a closing garage
Abu Dhabi gave Stevens a difficult but memorable entry point. The Caterham was not competitive, and the team around it was near the end, but he finished the race. For a debutant, that mattered. For Caterham, it was the closing line of a team that had entered Formula 1 as Lotus Racing in 2010, changed identity, and never scored a championship point.
Stevens then raced for Manor Marussia in 2015, another survival story. The team had missed the end of 2014 after entering administration, returned for 2015 and spent much of the season with limited resources. Stevens completed the year alongside Roberto Merhi and later Alexander Rossi, usually fighting the car, the budget and the blue flags in roughly that order.
His Formula 1 record ended with no points, but his wider career continued in endurance racing, where he became a Le Mans class winner. That later success gives his F1 spell a different texture. Stevens was not a failed racing driver who briefly reached Formula 1; he was a capable professional whose Grand Prix chance arrived with teams fighting at the sport’s financial edge.
