The Suzuka Sunday that put Kimi Antonelli in the record books

Sixth place rarely makes much noise in Formula 1, but Kimi Antonelli’s drive at Suzuka on 6 April 2025 did exactly that. The Mercedes rookie became the youngest driver ever to lead a world championship Grand Prix, then added another record by setting the fastest lap of the race. He was 18 years and 224 days old.

Antonelli’s afternoon was built on patience rather than spectacle. While the frontrunners stopped, Mercedes left him out longer on his opening stint, which moved him to the front for several laps during the pit cycle. That was enough to take the youngest-race-leader record, previously held by Max Verstappen since the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix. Antonelli was four days younger.

He then added a second record late in the race, setting a fastest lap of 1:30.965 on lap 50. That made him the youngest driver ever to record fastest lap in a Grand Prix as well, again taking a mark that had belonged to Verstappen. In a race won by Verstappen from Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, Antonelli finished sixth, 1.309 seconds behind team mate George Russell.

Antonelli was not yet fighting for the win, and Mercedes were not yet the story at the front. But Formula 1 has always had room for a performance that reveals what may be coming next. A quiet sixth can still be loud if it arrives with two records attached.
