Slim Borgudd was born on 25 November 1946 in Sweden and later became one of Formula 1’s more unusual one-point stories.
Borgudd’s route to the championship was hardly standard. Before Formula 1, he had a parallel life as a musician, including work as a drummer. That gave him one of the more distinctive biographies on the grid, even before the small matter of placing ABBA branding on his ATS in 1981.
A point on debut
Borgudd made his F1 debut with ATS at the 1981 British Grand Prix and finished sixth, scoring a championship point immediately. In a small team, that was a serious achievement. It required staying clean, managing the car and taking advantage when others failed to reach the same conclusion.
His Formula 1 career remained brief. He made further starts with ATS and later Tyrrell, but the opportunities did not develop into a secure long-term place. The machinery and funding realities of the early 1980s made it difficult for drivers outside the main competitive structures to build momentum.
More than a novelty
Borgudd is easy to remember for the music connection, but the racing record should not disappear behind the anecdote. Scoring on debut in a midfield-to-backmarker environment required proper competence. After F1, he continued racing in other categories, including touring cars and truck racing. The drummer line is fun. The point at Silverstone is the proof.
