Ayrton Senna took his first Formula 1 victory at the Portuguese Grand Prix on 21 April 1985, winning for Lotus in torrential conditions at Estoril.
Senna had already shown extraordinary speed, but Estoril turned reputation into proof. Starting from pole, he controlled a race that became less a normal Grand Prix and more a visibility test with timing sheets. Rain soaked the circuit, grip moved constantly and experienced drivers made mistakes all around him.
A wet-weather demonstration
Senna did not simply survive the conditions. He dominated them. The Lotus 97T was quick, but the margin came from the driver’s feel for the surface. He judged braking, throttle and steering with a precision that made the rest of the field look as if it were receiving weather updates several corners late.
Several rivals spun or fell away, while Senna kept stretching the lead. In an era of turbo power and fragile machinery, the drive combined aggression with restraint. That balance would become a central part of his legend, especially in the wet.
The first win of the Senna myth
By the finish, Senna had won by more than a minute. The victory gave Lotus its first win with him and gave Formula 1 one of the clearest early signs of what had arrived. Many drivers get a first win. Fewer get one that instantly becomes part of their mythology. Estoril did that for Senna, and the rain helped write it in permanent ink.
