George Russell won the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix on 30 June, but the race turned on a collision he did not cause. The team had improved through the first half of 2024, but it had not looked like the natural winner in Austria. That made the result opportunistic, not illegitimate. Formula 1 has always rewarded the driver who is still there when the leaders damage each other.
The larger story was the Verstappen-Norris fight. Their friendship, their recent on-track tension and McLaren’s rise toward Red Bull made the contact feel like a marker in the season’s changing mood. Norris was no longer chasing from a respectful distance. Verstappen was no longer racing only against cars that faded after the first stint. The Red Bull Ring made the new pressure visible.
Austria did not overturn the championship by itself, but it did alter the tone of 2024. McLaren had become a real threat, Mercedes had found a way back to the top step, and Verstappen had been forced into the kind of wheel-to-wheel argument that had been rarer during Red Bull’s most dominant phase. Russell left with the trophy. The paddock left talking about the crash.
