Ross Brawn was appointed an OBE in the New Year Honours announced at the end of 2009. The recognition followed Brawn GP’s remarkable title double in its only Formula 1 season.

Ross Brawn’s appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours was a fitting acknowledgement of one of Formula 1’s most extraordinary seasons.

At the end of 2009, Brawn GP had already secured both world titles, with Jenson Button winning the drivers’ championship and the team taking the constructors’ crown in its first and only year on the grid.

Brawn had led the rescue of the former Honda team after the manufacturer’s withdrawal, then turned that survival story into a championship-winning campaign.

The scale of that achievement was exceptional, because the team had to rebuild quickly, secure Mercedes power and maximise a car that became one of the standout technical stories of the season.

The success also reflected Brawn’s wider standing in the sport.

He was already known as one of Formula 1’s sharpest technical and strategic minds, with title-winning work at Benetton and Ferrari behind him. In 2009, though, he moved from master strategist to team figurehead, carrying the responsibility for the entire project and delivering immediate results.

The OBE therefore captured both the shock and the substance of Brawn GP’s championship year. It recognised not only a title-winning team boss, but a leader whose judgement, calm and technical authority shaped one of the most unlikely triumphs modern Formula 1 has seen.
