Pirelli confirmed on 25 November 2018 that it would remain Formula 1’s exclusive tyre supplier through the 2023 season, extending a partnership that had begun in 2011.

The renewal gave the sport continuity at a time when larger technical changes were approaching. Formula 1 was preparing for a shift to 18-inch wheels and a broader reset in how cars generated performance. Changing tyre supplier at the same time would have added another variable, and F1 already had enough variables to keep several committees busy.

Tyres as sporting policy

Pirelli’s role in Formula 1 was never just to provide round black objects and hope for the best. Since its return, the company had been asked to produce tyres that influenced strategy, degradation and race shape. That meant compounds had to be durable enough to be safe, but variable enough to create decisions. It is a narrow brief, and one that guarantees complaints from somebody every weekend.

The extension also gave teams a stable development reference. Tyre behaviour affects suspension design, aero platform, race strategy and driver style. Knowing Pirelli would remain in place helped teams plan for the coming regulation cycle with fewer unknowns.

A partnership embedded in the hybrid era

By extending the deal, F1 kept a supplier that had become part of the sport’s tactical identity. Pirelli tyres shaped the hybrid era’s conversations around management, undercuts, warm-up and stint length. The contract was therefore not only a commercial agreement. It was a decision to keep a particular style of racing architecture in place.
