Oscar Piastri’s first Grand Prix victory should have been clean enough to frame: a superb start, a McLaren one-two and a young driver reaching the top step. Instead, Hungary turned it into a lesson in how even the right result can arrive through deeply uncomfortable team radio.
The 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix on 21 July began with McLaren locking out the front row, Lando Norris on pole and Piastri alongside him. Piastri made the better start, took the lead into the first corner and spent the first phase of the race driving like a man who did not intend to wait for his first win to be handed over later. For a team that had spent much of the previous decade rebuilding from false dawns and technical confusion, the sight of two papaya cars controlling a Grand Prix was already a statement.
The strategy that complicated the obvious
The race became awkward during the final pit-stop sequence. McLaren pitted Norris first, partly to protect track position against Lewis Hamilton, and that put Norris ahead of Piastri after the stops had shaken out. The team then asked Norris to return the place, arguing that Piastri had held the lead on merit before the strategy had inverted the order.
Norris did not hand it back immediately. The radio exchanges became the race’s real soundtrack, with McLaren trying to manage a one-two finish while also repairing the fairness problem it had created. Eventually Norris slowed with a few laps remaining and allowed Piastri through. The Australian crossed the line first, Norris completed the McLaren one-two, and Hamilton finished third for Mercedes.
A first win with an edge
Piastri became a Grand Prix winner in only his second Formula 1 season. He also became the fifth Australian to win a World Championship Grand Prix, joining a line that includes Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo. The result was McLaren’s first one-two since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, another race in which an Australian led Norris home.
The controversy did not erase the quality of Piastri’s drive. He had beaten Norris off the line, controlled the opening stint and put himself in position before strategy made everything untidy. What it did change was the emotional temperature of the win. Instead of a simple breakthrough, it became a race about team process, driver obligation and the delicate politics of two fast team-mates in a car good enough to fight at the front.
For Piastri, the permanent line in the record is simple: first victory, McLaren, Hungaroring, 2024. The afternoon around it was less tidy. That may make it a better Formula 1 story, even if it made the podium slightly harder to celebrate in peace.
