Mercedes announced Nico Rosberg as the first driver for its new works team on 23 November 2009, confirming him for the 2010 Formula 1 season after the takeover of Brawn GP.
The move placed Rosberg at the foundation of Mercedes’ return as a full constructor. Brawn had just won both 2009 championships, but the team was changing identity, ownership and long-term ambition. Mercedes needed a driver who could give the new project credibility without turning it into a nostalgia exercise before it had even started.
A young anchor for a factory team
Rosberg arrived from Williams with a reputation for intelligence, clean speed and technical feedback. He had not yet won a Grand Prix, but he had shown enough consistency to look like a driver capable of helping build a team. For Mercedes, that mattered. The project needed development discipline as much as headline glamour.
There was also a wider strategic logic. Rosberg was German, young and marketable, but not merely symbolic. He gave Mercedes a long-term reference point while it prepared the structure that would eventually become the dominant force of the hybrid era.
The first piece of the Mercedes puzzle
The second seat would later go to Michael Schumacher, turning the line-up into a mix of future and legend. Rosberg’s early confirmation, however, was the first sporting statement of the new works team. It placed him at the centre of a project that would take years to mature, then eventually carry him to the 2016 World Championship.
