Michael Schumacher becomes Germany’s first home Grand Prix winner of the World Championship era

Michael Schumacher had already become Germany’s first Formula 1 world champion. At Hockenheim in 1995, he supplied the result the home crowd had been waiting for, becoming the first German to win the German Grand Prix during the World Championship era.

German drivers had won the national Grand Prix before 1950, most recently Rudolf Caracciola in 1939, but none had done so since the creation of the Formula 1 World Championship. Schumacher arrived as defending champion, the centre of a rapidly expanding German audience and the driver expected to end that absence.

Hill’s pole lasts one lap

Damon Hill qualified his Williams on pole by eight hundredths of a second, with Schumacher second for Benetton. Their rivalry had already produced collisions and recriminations, and the German race came only two weeks after both had retired following contact at Silverstone.

Hill’s challenge ended almost immediately. He spun out on the opening lap, leaving Schumacher to control the race against David Coulthard in the second Williams. Schumacher completed the 45 laps 5.988 seconds ahead of Coulthard, with Gerhard Berger a distant third for Ferrari.

The Benetton stopped after the finish and Schumacher completed part of his celebration while being towed, an undignified mechanical detail attached to a result that had otherwise followed the national script rather closely.

A title lead becomes a procession

The victory was Schumacher’s fifth of the season and extended his advantage over Hill. He went on to win nine races in 1995, matching Nigel Mansell’s then-record total for a single campaign, and secured his second consecutive championship before leaving Benetton for Ferrari.

Schumacher later won the German Grand Prix three more times, all with Ferrari. The first remained distinct. It turned Germany’s new world champion into the first World Championship-era winner of his own national race.
