McLaren’s 200th Formula 1 victory arrived through a team-mate duel rather than a comfortable procession. Lando Norris held off Oscar Piastri by 0.698 seconds in Hungary, placing McLaren alongside Ferrari as only the second constructor to reach a double century of World Championship wins.
The milestone came during a period in which McLaren had returned to sustained front-running form. Norris and Piastri completed the team’s fourth consecutive one-two finish, matching a sequence previously achieved by Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna in 1988.
The result was also McLaren’s seventh one-two of the 2025 season and its 13th victory at the Hungaroring, extending the team’s record at the circuit.
From Bruce McLaren to the first victory
Bruce McLaren founded the team in 1963 and entered the Formula 1 World Championship three years later. The first victory came at Spa in 1968, where Bruce won the Belgian Grand Prix in a car bearing his own name.
McLaren developed into a regular championship force during the 1970s. Emerson Fittipaldi delivered the first Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships in 1974, while James Hunt added another Drivers’ Championship in 1976.
The Ron Dennis transformation
The team’s largest period of success followed Ron Dennis’s Project Four merger with McLaren. The carbon-fibre MP4/1 changed Formula 1 chassis construction, while the Porsche-built TAG turbo engine helped produce championship-winning machinery for Niki Lauda and Alain Prost.
Prost and Ayrton Senna won 15 of 16 races during the dominant 1988 season. McLaren continued collecting championships with Senna, Mika Häkkinen and Lewis Hamilton, using engines from Honda, Ford, Peugeot and Mercedes across different phases.
Hamilton’s 2008 Drivers’ Championship was followed by a long title drought. McLaren continued winning occasional races, but the later Mercedes customer years, the unsuccessful Honda reunion and the first seasons under new management left the team far from the front.
The rebuild reaches another round number
The modern recovery developed through infrastructure investment, organisational changes and the driver pairing of Norris and Piastri. McLaren returned to victory in 2021, became a regular podium contender during 2023 and won the 2024 Constructors’ Championship.
By Hungary in 2025, the team had the machinery to turn one race into two viable winning strategies. Norris used one stop, Piastri used two, and the result remained a McLaren one-two despite the approaches converging during a tense final stint.
Ferrari had been the only constructor to exceed 200 World Championship victories. McLaren joined it 57 years after Bruce McLaren supplied win number one at Spa. The 200th came with both current cars filling the first two positions and the championship contest taking place inside the team.
