Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive Formula 1 World Championship at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on 23 November 2024, finishing fifth and making himself unreachable in the standings.
It was not the sort of title-clinching race that fills highlight reels by itself. George Russell won for Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton finished second and Carlos Sainz took third for Ferrari. Verstappen’s job was more controlled: finish ahead of Lando Norris, avoid unnecessary trouble and convert a season of advantage into the formal championship result.
A different kind of Verstappen title
The 2024 crown differed from his overwhelming 2023 season. Red Bull did not enjoy the same unbroken margin, and McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes all made stronger claims across the year. That made the title less of a procession and more of a management exercise. Verstappen still had enough early-season wins, race control and points discipline to keep the championship moving his way.
Las Vegas suited the theme. He did not need to win under the lights. He needed to close the account. Fifth place was enough, especially with Norris behind him, and the result placed Verstappen alongside the small group of drivers with four or more world titles.
Joining the four-title club
The achievement moved Verstappen into company with names such as Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel. More importantly, it confirmed that his championship run had survived a more competitive environment. Dominant cars can start dynasties. Sustaining them when rivals catch up is the harder exam.
Las Vegas 2024 was therefore not a spectacular Verstappen victory. It was something colder and more useful: a champion doing exactly what the championship required.
