Markus Duesmann was born on 23 June 1969. His Formula 1 relevance sits in the business and manufacturer-politics side of the sport, where the decisions are slower than a pit stop but often more expensive.
BMW knowledge and the Hinwil link
Duesmann’s career included senior engineering and management work inside the German car industry, including BMW. That mattered for Formula 1 because he had knowledge of the BMW Sauber period, when the Hinwil team became a serious manufacturer-backed operation and briefly threatened the front of the championship.
He later became chairman of Audi’s board of management. Under his leadership, Audi announced in 2022 that it would enter Formula 1 from the 2026 rules cycle. The project was framed around new power-unit regulations, greater electrification, sustainable fuel and a cost-cap structure intended to make entry more attractive to manufacturers.
Audi chooses the works-team route
Audi then moved toward a works partnership with Sauber, returning the Hinwil operation to a manufacturer story after earlier spells with Mercedes engines, BMW ownership and Alfa Romeo branding. Duesmann did not remain Audi chief executive through the whole build-up, but the formal entry decision belongs to his period in charge.
Audi’s arrival was not a driver signing or a new livery first. It was a strategic manufacturer decision tied to regulations, branding, technology and the belief that Formula 1 could again be worth the bill.
