Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 7 July 2024, and the result landed with unusual force for a driver who already owned almost every major record available. It was not another routine Mercedes win from the height of the hybrid era. It was his first Grand Prix victory since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, his ninth win in the British Grand Prix, and a home victory taken in his final season with Mercedes before his announced move to Ferrari.
The race began with George Russell on pole and Hamilton alongside him on the front row. Mercedes had looked stronger across the weekend than it had for much of the ground-effect rules cycle, but the race did not settle into a simple team duel. Changing weather pulled McLaren and Red Bull into the argument. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were quick, Max Verstappen remained dangerous even when the Red Bull was not at its most comfortable, and the track moved through conditions that made timing more important than neat theory.
Weather opens the race
Early on, the Mercedes pair led, but as rain arrived the McLarens became increasingly threatening. Norris moved into the lead during the mixed-weather phase, Piastri was also in contention, and the race turned on how quickly teams reacted to the move between slicks and intermediates, then back again. Silverstone’s weather did what it often does: not enough to make the race simply wet, enough to make every lap a tyre argument.
Hamilton’s decisive moment came when the field returned to slick tyres. He stopped one lap before Norris and emerged with the practical advantage. Norris also suffered a slow stop, but the story was not only about McLaren losing time. Hamilton still had to manage the soft tyres to the finish while Verstappen, on hards, closed in the final phase. The last laps carried a familiar shape, Hamilton leading at Silverstone with a Red Bull behind, but the competitive context was very different from earlier Mercedes years.
A record with weight behind it
Hamilton beat Verstappen by 1.465 seconds, with Norris third. Russell retired with a water system issue, which removed the pole-sitter from what had begun as a promising Mercedes afternoon. Carlos Sainz took the fastest lap point for Ferrari, but the day belonged to Hamilton and to a crowd that had watched him go through 2022, 2023 and the first half of 2024 without a win.
The ninth British Grand Prix victory gave Hamilton an unmatched number of wins in a single Grand Prix. It was also his 104th career victory at the time, extending a total that once looked as if it might stop at 103. The radio emotion after the flag made sense because the win was doing several jobs at once: ending a drought, restoring Mercedes to the top step, and giving Hamilton one last Silverstone victory in the colours that had defined the longest and most successful phase of his career.
There were cleaner Hamilton wins, and there were more dominant Hamilton wins. Few were received with this kind of release. Silverstone 2024 was a race about weather, timing and tyre management, but it was also about a champion proving that the gap since his previous victory had been a pause rather than a full stop.
