Lewis Hamilton reaches 300 Grand Prix starts with a podium

Lewis Hamilton’s 300th Grand Prix start came in a season when he was no longer winning everything, which made the number more useful. It measured not just dominance, but durability through a difficult Mercedes reset.

The 2022 French Grand Prix at Circuit Paul Ricard was Hamilton’s 300th World Championship start. By then, his Formula 1 career had already stretched from a sensational McLaren rookie season in 2007 to seven world championships, record victory totals and the uncomfortable new reality of Mercedes trying to understand a difficult ground-effect car.

A milestone in a harder season

Mercedes entered 2022 with the W13, a car that suffered badly from porpoising and lacked the easy authority of the team’s hybrid-era peak. Hamilton and George Russell spent the early part of the season fighting to make podiums possible rather than treating them as routine. That made Paul Ricard a useful kind of landmark: Hamilton did not simply turn up for a ceremonial start. He drove one of Mercedes’ strongest races of the year.

Hamilton finished second behind Max Verstappen, while Russell completed the podium in third. It was Mercedes’ first double podium of the 2022 season and a sign that the team was at least beginning to extract more from the car. The race was still a long way from the standard Mercedes had set during its championship years, but it gave Hamilton’s 300th start a competitive edge rather than leaving it as a statistic in a difficult midfield fight.

Reaching 300 starts placed Hamilton in a small group of Formula 1’s longest-serving drivers. The number carried extra weight because of what those starts contained: immediate rookie impact, the 2008 title with McLaren, the Mercedes move, the long run of championships, the 2021 Abu Dhabi defeat and then the less glamorous work of rebuilding.

Hamilton would later push the longevity records further, but France was the round number. Three hundred starts, second place, and a Mercedes podium on a day when the team badly needed proof that its season was not only an engineering autopsy.
