Lando Norris won his first Formula 1 race at the Miami Grand Prix on 5 May 2024, ending a long wait for a driver who had spent years being labelled almost-there.
The victory came at his 110th Grand Prix start and in a McLaren that had taken a major upgrade package to Miami. Norris had already built a reputation for speed, consistency and near-misses, but first wins do not arrive for reputation. They require the race to open, the car to respond and the driver to stop the opportunity escaping.
The Safety Car opens the door
A well-timed Safety Car helped Norris take the lead after others had already stopped. That gave McLaren track position, but it did not hand over the win. Norris still had to manage the restart, keep Max Verstappen behind and prove that the upgraded McLaren’s pace was real in clean air.
He did exactly that. Instead of fading under pressure, he pulled away, controlling the final stint with a margin that made the win feel earned rather than fortunate. McLaren’s strategy had put him in position. His pace made the result convincing.
A breakthrough that changed the label
Norris had been described as a future winner for so long that the phrase was beginning to gather dust. Miami changed it. The result gave him a first victory, gave McLaren confirmation of its development direction and gave the grid another serious front-running threat. The waiting was over. The jokes about waiting, unfortunately for everyone around him, probably were not.
