Kimi Antonelli’s first Formula 1 podium arrived on 15 June 2025 at the Canadian Grand Prix. Mercedes won the race with George Russell, but the longer-term milestone was the teenager in the other silver car finishing third.
Antonelli had entered Formula 1 under heavy expectation, partly because Mercedes promoted him into a seat with little room for anonymity. Montreal gave him the result that changed the early framing of his rookie season. He finished behind Russell and Max Verstappen, and ahead of a McLaren pair whose late-race tension helped push the race toward a Safety Car finish.
A rookie result with statistical weight
The podium made Antonelli one of the youngest drivers ever to stand on a Formula 1 rostrum. It also made him the first Italian on an F1 podium since Jarno Trulli at the 2009 Japanese Grand Prix. That second fact says as much about Italy’s strange modern driver drought as it does about Antonelli, but it gave the result a national edge.
For Mercedes, the day had the tidy look teams enjoy: pole converted to victory by Russell, a rookie podium from Antonelli and a useful haul in the constructors’ fight. F1 rarely stays tidy for long, so teams are advised to enjoy these afternoons before someone finds a strategic rake to step on.
The first proof point
First podiums do not guarantee championships. They do, however, change the evidence file. Antonelli’s Canada drive showed he could absorb pressure in a front-running car and bring home a result that matched the scale of the promotion. For a teenage driver replacing a legend-shaped absence at Mercedes, that was not a bad first answer.
