Formula 1 had brought mid-race refuelling back in 1994 to create strategic variation. At Hockenheim, the system produced its most frightening image when fuel sprayed over Jos Verstappen’s Benetton and turned an ordinary pit stop into a fireball around the driver and mechanics.
Verstappen stopped on lap 15 of the German Grand Prix. The Benetton crew attached the standard refuelling equipment, but fuel escaped from the nozzle and spread across the car and pit area. It ignited almost immediately.
For several seconds the B194, Verstappen and members of the crew disappeared inside the flames. Fire extinguishers were already close to the car and the blaze was put out quickly. Verstappen escaped with burns, while several mechanics also required treatment. The incident could easily have produced a much worse outcome.
A standard system under examination
Refuelling had returned that season after being absent since the early 1980s. The FIA required teams to use equipment supplied through a common system, intended to control the rate and method of fuel delivery. Hockenheim showed that standardisation did not remove the danger.
The investigation focused on the refuelling rig and a filter that had been removed from Benetton’s equipment. The FIA reported that foreign material had affected the closing of a valve and examined the absence of the filter as part of the failure. Benetton disputed the argument that the modification had caused the fire.
The technical disagreement continued after the race, but the visible fact required no interpretation: fuel had been released over a hot racing car while people stood around it, and ignition had followed within seconds.
The picture that defined refuelling risk
Television carried the fire live, while photographs of mechanic Paul Seaby escaping through the flames became among the most recognisable images of 1990s Formula 1. They made the hazard understandable in a way that flow-rate diagrams and valve reports could not.
Refuelling equipment was revised for 1995, with changes intended to improve the connection between rig and car before fuel could flow. Fires and spills still occurred during the refuelling era, although none produced an image as enduring as the Benetton stop.
Formula 1 continued with mid-race refuelling until the end of 2009. The practice was removed for 2010, largely for cost and sporting reasons, but Hockenheim remained the clearest reminder that every strategic pit stop also involved transferring a large quantity of fuel beside hot machinery and crowded working space.
Verstappen returned at the next race in Hungary and scored his first podium. The German Grand Prix remained attached to his career for a very different reason: a routine stop that became a safety investigation before the car had even left its marks.
