Palmer made his name by winning the GP2 title in 2014, a result that placed him firmly in the frame for a Formula 1 opportunity. After serving in a reserve and development role, he stepped up to a race seat with Renault for the 2016 season, when the manufacturer returned to Formula 1 under its own name.
He stayed with Renault into 2017 and contested 35 Grands Prix across his F1 career. The results did not turn him into a front-running driver, but he operated in a team that was rebuilding and trying to re-establish itself as a works contender. That context shaped much of his time on the grid.
After leaving Formula 1, Palmer moved into the media side of the sport. He became known for detailed race analysis and clear technical explanations, first in broadcast and radio roles and later as a regular Formula 1 commentator and pundit. That second career gave him a different kind of place in the paddock, this time as an interpreter of the sport rather than a driver within it.
