John Fitch’s World Championship career amounted to two Grand Prix starts, but his influence on motor racing extended far beyond a results table. He raced for Mercedes, managed Chevrolet’s early Corvette programme and spent decades designing ways to make an impact less destructive.
John Cooper Fitch was born in Indianapolis on 4 August 1917. His early life placed him close to both cars and aviation, although his racing career began only after service during the Second World War. Fitch flew combat missions, was shot down and ended the conflict as a prisoner of war in Germany.
After returning to the United States, he began competing in sports cars and became the Sports Car Club of America’s first national champion in 1951. His performances attracted Briggs Cunningham and later Mercedes-Benz racing director Alfred Neubauer.
An American inside the Mercedes team
Fitch joined Mercedes during its post-war return to international competition. He raced alongside drivers including Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss and Karl Kling, contributing to a programme that combined major sports-car events with technical development.
His most celebrated Mercedes result came in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Driving a largely production-based 300 SL with journalist Kurt Gessl as passenger, Fitch won the GT category and finished fifth overall.
Fitch also made two Formula 1 World Championship starts. He drove an HWM in the 1953 Italian Grand Prix and later appeared at Monza in 1955 with a Maserati entered by Stirling Moss’s organisation. Neither produced points, and Formula 1 remained a small part of a much broader career.
From racing cars to impact barriers
Fitch was present at the 1955 Le Mans disaster as a Mercedes team driver. The scale of the accident reinforced his interest in improving the protection available to competitors and spectators.
After Mercedes withdrew from racing, Fitch worked with Chevrolet as a driver and manager during the early development of the Corvette competition programme. He also helped design and manage Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.
His later work concentrated increasingly on safety. Fitch developed impact-attenuation systems for circuits and public roads, including arrangements of sand-filled barrels designed to absorb energy before a vehicle reached a solid obstacle. Variations of the system became widely known as Fitch barriers.
Fitch continued advising, demonstrating cars and attending historic events well into old age. He died in 2012 at 95. His two Formula 1 starts were brief, but his longer record joined racing experience to the practical question of how drivers might survive the mistakes, failures and collisions that competition inevitably produced.
