Jan Lammers was born on 2 June 1956, which is one way of beginning a career that refused to fit neatly inside one racing box.
In Formula 1, Lammers had the wrong kind of timing. He arrived with Shadow in 1979, then moved through ATS and Theodore, fighting cars that usually had more problems than points potential. His Grand Prix career paused after 1982, then made a wonderfully odd late return with March in 1992, a decade after his previous F1 start.
The wider career was richer. Lammers became a Le Mans winner, a sports car regular, a touring car racer and, later, a senior figure in Dutch motorsport. F1 was part of the story, not the whole of it.
Some drivers are defined by the championship table. Lammers is better understood as a racing lifer who kept finding another cockpit, another category and another reason to keep going.
