Jackie Stewart won the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on 23 June 1968. The result gave Matra its first Formula 1 World Championship victory and turned a wet afternoon into a major marker for a French constructor.
Matra and Tyrrell find their opening
Stewart was driving the Matra-Ford run by Ken Tyrrell’s Matra International operation. The car was powered by the Cosworth DFV, the engine that was rapidly changing the competitive structure of Formula 1. Matra supplied the chassis, Tyrrell supplied the race-team sharpness, and Stewart supplied the part where the driver had to make all of that look sensible in the rain.
Chris Amon started from pole for Ferrari, but the race moved toward Matra. Stewart won by more than a minute and a half from Jean-Pierre Beltoise in another Matra, with Pedro Rodríguez third for BRM. It was not only a win. It was a Matra one-two at a circuit that could punish small mistakes very quickly.
A French constructor steps into the winners’ list
The result was a beginning rather than a complete story. Matra would become central to Stewart’s first world championship in 1969, again with Tyrrell running the operation. The 1968 Dutch Grand Prix was the first championship proof that the combination could beat the established teams.
It was a first win for a constructor, a wet-weather Stewart drive and an early chapter in the Stewart, Tyrrell and Matra line that would soon carry a world title.
