Force India confirmed Nico Hülkenberg’s return on 4 December 2013, bringing him back from Sauber for the 2014 Formula 1 season on a multi-year deal.
The move made sense in the slightly unromantic way good midfield decisions often do. Hülkenberg had already driven for Force India in 2012 and had built a reputation for dependable speed, strong feedback and the ability to make a car look better than it had any strict right to look. Sauber had given him standout moments in 2013, but the team’s finances and consistency made the future less appealing.
A familiar team before a new era
For Force India, the timing was important. Formula 1 was about to enter the hybrid power-unit era, with new engines, new cooling demands and new ways for teams to get confused. Bringing back a driver who understood the organisation gave the team a stable reference point as everything else changed.
Hülkenberg’s return also said something about his career pattern. He was highly rated, rarely short of interest and somehow never quite in the right place when the top seats opened. Force India offered competitive midfield machinery and a team that valued his consistency. It was not the glamour move, but glamour does not always score points.
The dependable option
The 2014 deal put Hülkenberg back with a team where he could influence development and regularly fight for strong points. It did not solve the great mystery of his missing F1 podium, but it strengthened the impression that he was one of the grid’s most useful drivers: fast, technical and permanently waiting for circumstance to be less annoying.
