Romain Grosjean survived one of modern Formula 1’s most frightening accidents on 29 November 2020, when his Haas crashed and burst into flames on the opening lap of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
The impact split the car as it pierced the barrier, leaving the survival cell lodged in the metalwork and surrounded by fire. For several seconds the scene looked like something Formula 1 had spent decades trying to leave behind. Grosjean’s escape turned it into something else as well: a brutal validation of modern safety systems.
The Halo’s defining evidence
The Halo had been controversial when introduced in 2018, largely because motorsport is excellent at arguing with safety until safety wins the argument in public. In Bahrain, the device helped protect Grosjean’s head as the car forced its way through the barrier. Without it, the outcome could have been far worse.
The response was just as important. Medical car doctor Ian Roberts, driver Alan van der Merwe and trackside marshals reached the scene quickly, using extinguishers to create a route out as Grosjean climbed from the survival cell. His burns were serious, but he was alive and walking, which turned disbelief into relief across the paddock.
A crash that changed the conversation

The accident led to further analysis of barriers, fuel systems, survival-cell behaviour and emergency procedures. It also ended any remaining serious debate about whether the Halo belonged in Formula 1. Grosjean’s crash was terrifying because it looked like the past returning. His survival showed how much of the past had been engineered away.
