Franz Tost was born on 20 January 1956 in Trins, Austria. He would later become one of Formula 1’s longest-serving team principals.

Franz Tost was born in Trins, Austria, on 20 January 1956. Long before he became a familiar figure on the Formula 1 pit wall, he built a background in racing and team management that would define his later career.

Tost eventually took charge of Red Bull’s second Formula 1 operation when Scuderia Toro Rosso entered the championship in 2006. He stayed in that leadership role through the team’s later rebrand to AlphaTauri and remained in place until the end of the 2023 season.

Across that span, he oversaw a team that played a clear role in Red Bull’s driver development structure. Young talents such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz passed through the Faenza-based squad on their way to bigger roles in Formula 1. Vettel’s victory for Toro Rosso at Monza in 2008 remains the standout sporting high point of Tost’s tenure.

His reputation in the paddock was built on discipline, directness and a strong belief in giving young drivers track time and responsibility. That made him a significant figure not only for Toro Rosso and AlphaTauri, but also for Red Bull’s wider Formula 1 system over nearly two decades.
