The 2020 Austrian Grand Prix on 5 July was the first Formula 1 race after the COVID-19 shutdown. The season had been due to begin in Australia in March, only for the event to be cancelled as the pandemic took hold. Nearly four months later, the championship restarted behind closed doors at the Red Bull Ring, with strict protocols, empty grandstands and a calendar that had been rebuilt under pressure.
Valtteri Bottas won from pole for Mercedes, but the race was much less orderly than the result first suggests. Reliability problems, safety cars and penalties kept disturbing the afternoon. Max Verstappen retired early with electrical trouble, removing Red Bull’s main home-track threat almost immediately.
Norris arrives on the podium
Bottas held on to win ahead of Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari, which had not looked like podium machinery on pure pace. Lando Norris finished third for McLaren, taking the first podium of his Formula 1 career after Lewis Hamilton received a penalty for contact with Alex Albon. Norris also set fastest lap on the final lap, dragging himself within the time gap needed to secure the podium.
The Albon-Hamilton contact carried its own tension. Albon had been attacking on fresher tyres and looked capable of giving Red Bull a shot at victory before the collision damaged his race. Hamilton crossed the line second but was classified fourth after the penalty, behind Bottas, Leclerc and Norris.
The broader significance of Austria was not only sporting. It proved Formula 1 could stage a race under the protocols of the pandemic era, even if the atmosphere was strange and the paddock felt reduced. The 2020 season would go on to become one of the most unusual calendars in championship history, with repeated venues, new additions and old circuits returning out of necessity.
Austria was therefore both a race and a restart procedure. Bottas won it. Norris used it to become a podium finisher. Formula 1 used it to begin a season that had almost disappeared before it had properly started.
