Formula 1 announced on 29 June 2018 that Amazon Web Services had become its Official Cloud and Machine Learning Provider. The wording sounded like modern corporate furniture, but the deal sat inside a real change in how Formula 1 wanted to present itself after Liberty Media’s takeover of the commercial rights.
The championship had spent years treating its data as something mostly useful to teams, timing screens and insiders. Liberty’s F1 wanted that data to become part of the broadcast product: visible, branded, explained and packaged for viewers who might not naturally understand tyre degradation, undercut windows or the difference between a dramatic gap and a strategically harmless one.
Turning hidden systems into the show
The AWS agreement covered cloud infrastructure, machine learning and analytics. Formula 1 said it would move much of its infrastructure from on-premises data centres to AWS and use cloud services to support strategy data, tracking systems and digital broadcasts. In practice, it pointed toward a sport trying to turn huge live data flows into digestible television and online features.
Not every broadcast graphic that followed was universally loved, which is a polite way of saying that Formula 1 fans can detect over-explained probability percentages at 300 metres. But the direction was clear. Data was no longer just a back-end timing product. It was becoming part of the language of the show, with tyre performance, pit strategy, battle predictions and car performance metrics turned into recurring features.
The deal did not alter the cars or the regulations. It changed how Formula 1’s information was processed, displayed and sold. By 2018, the sport was trying to look less closed and less analogue without losing the technical density that made it distinctive. Cloud computing and machine learning were not magic words that solved racing, but they gave F1 a partner and a platform for making invisible systems more visible.
