The 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 23 November became the final Formula 1 race for Jean-Éric Vergne, Adrian Sutil and Kamui Kobayashi. It was also Caterham’s last appearance before the team disappeared from the grid.
Season finales often collect endings, but Abu Dhabi 2014 gathered several at once. The title fight sat at the front of the story, yet further down the order were careers and teams reaching their final F1 laps with much less ceremony.
Three driver chapters close
Vergne’s exit from Toro Rosso was especially sharp. He had produced strong drives in 2014, but Red Bull’s driver system was moving on. Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz were coming, and Vergne found himself pushed out despite a season that did not look like a natural farewell.
Sutil’s final race came after a difficult year with Sauber, a team stuck in a winless, point-less season and already preparing a new line-up. Kobayashi’s ending was tied to Caterham’s survival fight. His return to F1 had been popular, but the car was uncompetitive and the team’s finances were collapsing around him.
Caterham’s last stand
Caterham had missed races before Abu Dhabi after entering administration, then returned through a late rescue effort and crowdfunding push. Its presence at Yas Marina was therefore part race entry, part farewell note. The team had arrived in 2010 with ambitions of growing into the midfield. By late 2014, it was fighting simply to be present.
Abu Dhabi did not transform any of these stories. It closed them. Vergne, Sutil and Kobayashi left the F1 grid, while Caterham became another reminder that reaching Formula 1 is hard and surviving it can be worse.
