On 27 June 1906, Ferenc Szisz brought his Renault home as the winner of the Grand Prix de l’Automobile Club de France. The race had begun the previous day on public roads outside Le Mans, and by the time Szisz reached the finish it had already given top-level motor racing a title, a scale and a tone that would survive long after the cars themselves became museum pieces.
The event was not Formula 1. It was too early for that, by 44 years. Yet it sits at the start of the Grand Prix tradition from which Formula 1 later grew. The Automobile Club de France created the race partly to escape the limits of the Gordon Bennett Cup, where national entry restrictions did not suit the size and ambition of the French motor industry. The new race let manufacturers, not just countries, show what they could build.
Heat, tar and removable rims
The course was enormous: a triangular public-road circuit of more than 100 kilometres, used six times on each of two days. The cars were heavy, the engines huge, and the roads were punishing. Hot weather softened the tarred surface, throwing dust and sticky material into the faces of drivers and riding mechanics. Punctures were frequent enough to shape the race rather than decorate the report.
Szisz’s Renault survived those conditions better than the rest. Felice Nazzaro finished second for Fiat, while Albert Clément took third for Clément-Bayard. Michelin’s detachable rim system also became part of the story, allowing quicker tyre changes than the older method of replacing tyres by hand. The first Grand Prix was already a technology race, just with more dust in the driver’s mouth.
A victory with a long echo
Renault used the win as proof of speed and durability, and the race helped establish the Grand Prix as a premier form of motor sport. Later championships would change the rules, the circuits, the cars and the commercial machinery around them. The name remained.
Szisz did not win a Formula 1 race, because there was no such thing to win. What he won was the event that gave Formula 1’s ancestors their most important label. That is a different kind of first, and it is harder to retire.
