Esteban Ocon takes his first Formula 1 victory

Esteban Ocon entered the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix without a victory and with only one previous podium. He left as a Grand Prix winner after avoiding the opening-lap destruction, taking the lead during an extraordinary restart sequence and spending most of the afternoon with Sebastian Vettel close enough to punish a single mistake.

Ocon started eighth for Alpine on a damp track. At the first corner, Valtteri Bottas braked too late and triggered a multi-car accident involving Lando Norris, Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez. A separate collision involving Lance Stroll removed Charles Leclerc and Daniel Ricciardo from contention.

The race was stopped. Ocon had escaped the worst of the damage and was among the remaining runners preparing for the restart.

From second on the road to first in the race

Lewis Hamilton lined up alone on the grid because every other driver pitted for slick tyres at the end of the formation lap. Ocon entered the pits from second position and emerged at the head of the group starting from pit lane.

When Hamilton stopped one lap later, Ocon inherited the lead. Vettel followed closely in the Aston Martin and remained within striking distance through the pit-stop phase.

Ocon controlled the race without the advantage of a clearly faster car. Vettel repeatedly closed under braking but could not complete a pass. Alpine’s pit work preserved the lead, and Ocon managed traffic and tyre life while the four-time champion remained behind him.

Alonso delays Hamilton

Hamilton recovered from the rear of the field and eventually reached Fernando Alonso. Ocon’s Alpine team-mate defended for several laps, forcing Hamilton to use time and tyres before passing. That resistance reduced the number of laps available for the Mercedes driver to reach the leaders.

Ocon completed 70 laps to finish 1.859 seconds ahead of Vettel on the road. Hamilton crossed the line third and was later promoted to second after Vettel’s disqualification.

The victory made Ocon the 14th French driver to win a World Championship Grand Prix. He was also the first French driver to win in a French car with a French engine since Alain Prost’s 1983 Austrian Grand Prix victory for Renault.

Ocon had lost his Formula 1 seat after 2018 and spent a season as Mercedes reserve driver before returning with Renault. Hungary turned that interrupted career into a winning one. The opportunity arrived through chaos, but keeping Vettel behind for almost an entire Grand Prix required something much less random.
