Most Formula 1 drivers entered the wet 1968 German Grand Prix with an open-face helmet, goggles or a separate visor. Dan Gurney arrived with his face and jaw enclosed inside a Bell helmet, introducing a form of protection that would soon make the older design look alarmingly incomplete.
Gurney had worked with Bell on the development of the Star full-face helmet. Earlier racing helmets concentrated protection around the upper and rear sections of the skull, leaving the face exposed to fire, debris and direct impact.
The full-face design extended the shell around the driver’s jaw and incorporated a visor into the helmet. It offered more complete coverage, although early versions also had to solve practical problems involving ventilation, visibility and fogging.
A first appearance in the worst visibility
Gurney used the helmet at the Indianapolis 500 before bringing it into Formula 1 at the German Grand Prix on 4 August 1968. The timing was severe. Heavy rain and fog covered the Nürburgring, making visibility poor even before spray reached the visor.
Driving his Eagle-Weslake, Gurney ran among the leading group early in the race. He later struck a concealed rock near the Karussell and stopped for a replacement tyre, removing him from contention.
His result was secondary to the equipment visible above the cockpit. Gurney had become the first driver to race in a Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix using a full-face helmet.
The exposed face disappears
Adoption was not immediate or universal, but the advantages were difficult to dismiss. Formula 1 drivers increasingly moved towards full-face designs during the following seasons, particularly as concerns over fire and facial injury received greater attention.
Helmet construction continued developing through improved shells, visors, fire-resistant linings and later head-and-neck systems. Gurney’s helmet did not contain those later advances, but its basic architecture became standard.
The 1968 German Grand Prix is primarily remembered for Jackie Stewart’s four-minute victory. Deeper in the field, Gurney supplied a separate safety milestone. A driver’s face had become part of the area the helmet was expected to protect.
