Carlos Sainz won his first Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone on 3 July 2022, but the British Grand Prix refused to be a simple first-win story. The race began with a terrifying first-lap accident involving Zhou Guanyu, was stopped with a red flag, restarted, and then turned into a late strategic argument inside Ferrari’s own garage.
Sainz had taken his first pole position the day before, also at Silverstone. At the original start, he was immediately swallowed by the chaos behind. Zhou’s Alfa Romeo was launched upside down after contact in the pack and skidded over the barriers at Abbey, coming to rest between the tyre wall and debris fencing. Zhou escaped serious injury, a result that owed much to modern safety structures, including the halo. Alex Albon was also involved in a separate heavy accident and required medical checks.
Ferrari’s win, Ferrari’s argument
After the restart, Sainz, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Sergio Pérez and Lewis Hamilton all moved through phases of contention. Verstappen’s race was damaged by debris that affected his Red Bull, while Ferrari seemed to have the pace to win but not the cleanest way to decide who should do it.
The late safety car changed everything. Ferrari pitted Sainz for soft tyres but left Leclerc, who was leading, on older hard tyres. That created an uncomfortable restart: Sainz behind his team-mate on fresher rubber, Pérez and Hamilton also ready to attack. Sainz quickly passed Leclerc and drove clear to win. Pérez finished second for Red Bull, Hamilton third for Mercedes, and Leclerc fell to fourth.
For Sainz, the win was a deserved personal breakthrough after years of strong but winless Formula 1 work with Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren and Ferrari. For Ferrari, it was another victory wrapped in operational doubt. The team had won the race and still left with questions about whether it had damaged Leclerc’s title bid.
Silverstone 2022 therefore sits in two files at once. It was the day Sainz became a Grand Prix winner. It was also a race that showed how quickly a winning Ferrari afternoon could become a strategy debrief with smoke coming out of the folder.
