Carlo Chiti died on 7 July 1994 after one of the more colourful engineering careers in post-war motor racing. He was not a driver and he did not fit neatly into the modern image of a technical director, but his work ran through several important Formula 1 and sports-car stories: Ferrari’s early rear-engined transition, the 156 Sharknose, the 1961 championship season, the ATS breakaway, Alfa Romeo’s Autodelta programme and later independent engine projects.
Chiti was trained as an aeronautical engineer and entered racing through Alfa Romeo before joining Ferrari in the 1950s. At Maranello he became part of the technical group that had to drag Enzo Ferrari’s team into the rear-engined age. Ferrari had been slow to abandon front-engined thinking, but the British garagiste teams made the direction unavoidable. Chiti’s answer, developed with colleagues in the Ferrari design office, became part of the 156 Sharknose programme.
The Sharknose years
The Ferrari 156 carried Phil Hill to the 1961 Drivers’ Championship and gave Ferrari the Constructors’ title. Its name came from the twin nostril nose, but its importance was mechanical and architectural. It represented Ferrari properly committing to the rear-engined Formula 1 world that Cooper and Lotus had already made necessary. The season was also marked by the fatal crash of Wolfgang von Trips at Monza, so the car’s success came with the period’s familiar shadow.
Chiti left Ferrari after the internal rupture often called the Great Walkout, when several key figures departed at the end of 1961. The ATS project that followed was ambitious, clever on paper and unsuccessful on track. It damaged reputations, but it did not end Chiti’s influence. He returned to Alfa Romeo’s orbit through Autodelta, where engines and sports prototypes became a major part of his work.
Alfa, engines and independence
Through Autodelta and Alfa Romeo, Chiti remained a recurring presence in Formula 1 paddocks during the 1970s and early 1980s. Alfa’s return as an engine supplier and then as a works team carried his fingerprints, even when the results did not match the imagination behind the machinery. Later, with Motori Moderni, he tried again as an independent engine builder in an era increasingly hostile to small technical operations.
Chiti’s career contained success, misjudgement, persistence and a strong dislike of disappearing quietly. That makes him a very human engineering figure. He helped build one of Ferrari’s most famous cars, left in one of its most famous internal fractures, and spent the rest of his career proving that one failed project would not define him.
