Andrea Chiesa was born on this day in 1964 in Switzerland. He arrived in Formula 1 with Fondmetal for the 1992 season, entered ten Grands Prix, and made it to the start grid for three of them. It was that kind of year.
The driver
Chiesa came up through Formula 3 and Formula 3000 before landing a seat with Fondmetal, the small Italian team that had been cobbled together from the remnants of Osella.

The car, designed around a Ford Cosworth DFR, was not built to trouble the midfield. It was built to exist, and even that was a recurring challenge.
Three starts from ten attempts
The 1992 season was brutal for the smaller teams.
Pre-qualifying was still part of the process, an extra elimination round before qualifying itself, which meant outfits like Fondmetal often went home on Thursday without ever making it onto the Friday grid.
Chiesa entered ten races and pre-qualified or qualified for three: Brazil, Mexico and Spain.
His best result was a classified finish in Spain, where he was running at the end in fourteenth place, several laps down on Nigel Mansell, which about sums up the season.
Fondmetal’s last stand
Fondmetal folded mid-season in 1992. Chiesa was not the only casualty.
The team had run Gabriele Tarquini alongside him, and neither driver had the machinery to show what they could genuinely do. Chiesa did not return to Formula 1 after that.
He continued racing in other series, but his F1 career was over at three starts.
A very 1992 story
Chiesa’s stint in Formula 1 is one of those stories that only really makes sense in context.
The early 1990s were the last era when the back of the grid was genuinely chaotic, when a driver could enter ten races and start three of them without it being considered scandalous, and when small teams with modest funding could still try their luck.
Chiesa tried his. The luck was not especially forthcoming.
