Formula 1 held its first race in Azerbaijan on 19 June 2016, using the European Grand Prix title for a new street event in Baku. Nico Rosberg won for Mercedes, completing a clean weekend with pole, victory and fastest lap.
A new street circuit with an old race name
The Baku City Circuit was a strange addition at first glance: a long, fast street track using a title historically associated with races elsewhere in Europe. The layout mixed wide full-throttle sections with a narrow old-city sequence that looked as if Formula 1 had been posted through a letterbox. It was not universally loved immediately, but it was certainly not anonymous.
Rosberg controlled the race from the front, beating Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari by 16.696 seconds. Sergio Pérez finished third for Force India after a strong weekend, while Lewis Hamilton spent much of the race frustrated by a power-unit setting issue and the restrictive radio rules then in force.
The calm debut before Baku learned chaos
The 2016 race was relatively orderly compared with Baku’s later reputation. In 2017 the circuit produced a far more chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and over time it became known for safety cars, long straights, restart trouble and improbable podium chances. The debut was therefore slightly misleading: Baku entered politely before showing its more entertainingly awkward side.
For 19 June, the event matters as a calendar and geography milestone. It brought Azerbaijan into the Formula 1 World Championship, marked the last use to date of the European Grand Prix name, and gave Rosberg another important step toward the 2016 drivers’ title.
